Diners in San Francisco and Seattle worst tippers in U.S.

Want to make a living out of becoming a waiter or waitress? Then don't move to San Francisco or Seattle.

It has been revealed that diners in the two American cities are the lowest tippers in the country.

People who live or eat in the San Francisco Bay area tipped on average 18.6 per cent - the same as Seattle.

The national average is 19.2 per cent.

One theory which has been put forward is that many diners in San Francisco deduct part of the three or four percent that restaurants tack onto the bill for Healthy San Francisco.

The average meal in San Francisco was found to cost  $38.88 - fifth highest in the country - behind only Las Vegas, which topped at $47.53, New York City, Long Island, and Miami.

Diners in Philadelphia and St Louis are known to be the best tippers at an average of 19.6 per cent.

Stingy: Diners in Seattle were said to be the worst in America, tied with San Francisco

New York has always been seen to be the capital of tipping with everyone from garbage collectors to deli workers expecting to be tipped.

Also in the Big Apple, cab drivers expect to be tipped anything from 20 to 30 per cent where as in other U.S. cities it is ten to 20 per cent.

Other studies in tipping have also shown that rich people tend to be a lot stingier in the tipping department than their poorer counterparts.

It was noted that those who had the most generally tended to give the least.

It has also been found that tips have become less about a reward for good service but rather a kind of surcharge on any service, whether good, adequate or even poor.

Tips are given more out of fear of looking cheap or being confronted by the waitress - which sometimes happens - rather than out of any gratitude for services well rendered, a study found.
